When buying perfume online, try a sample on one wrist before choosing a bottle. Smell it just after spraying, again two hours later and at the end of the day. On a second wear, ask yourself which part you actually look forward to smelling again.

1. Start with clean skin

Apply the fragrance to clean skin where other scented products are unlikely to interfere. You do not need to overspray. The goal is to follow how the fragrance develops, not overwhelm your nose in the first few minutes.

2. Do not judge only the opening

The first impression is only one stage of a fragrance. Citrus, fruit, spice or aromatic top notes can change quickly as the scent moves into its heart and base. Give it time before deciding whether you like it.

3. Wear it during a normal day

Testing at home for five minutes tells you less than wearing a fragrance through work, an evening out or an ordinary weekend. Notice how often you catch the scent, whether you still enjoy it later and whether it feels right for the situations in which you would actually wear it.

4. Try it more than once

Your perception can change with weather, mood, clothing and what else you have smelled that day. A second or third wear is often more useful than repeatedly smelling the same fragrance in one sitting.

5. Compare carefully

If you are choosing between several fragrances, avoid testing too many at the same time. Compare a small number and make a quick note of what you liked: freshness, sweetness, fruit, woods, spice, projection or the way the dry-down develops.

6. Choose a sample size that matches your goal

If you are exploring widely, a smaller size can be enough to decide whether a fragrance deserves more attention. If you already like it and want a longer test, choose a larger sample where available. Our guide to 2ml, 5ml and 10ml fragrance samples explains the differences in more detail.

7. Decide after the dry-down

Before buying a full bottle, ask whether you enjoyed the fragrance after the excitement of the opening had faded. The dry-down is what you will live with for most of the wear, so it should carry more weight than the first few minutes.
